The Department of Surgery is one of the major departments of the UERM Medical Center. All members of the consultant staff are Fellows, Diplomates, or both, of their respective specialty societies.

    Consultants

All consultants are either Fellows or Diplomates, or both, of their respective specialty societies. They may or may not be connected with the College of Medicine but enjoy hospital privileges. While an employee-employer relationship exists between the consultants and the College of Medicine, the same is NOT TRUE in the University Hospital.

    Residents

    1. The residents are subject to the provisions contained in their respective Residency Training programs/curricula.

    2. A copy of the training program must be given to the resident upon appointment.

    3. The resident must present a research paper annually.

    4. The residents will be evaluated by consultants on service based on an evaluation criteria prescribed by the Department.

    5. Residents on outside rotation must follow the rules and regulations of the receiving institution and must submit a report to the Department immediately after the completion of their rotation.

    6. The Residency Training Committee, through the Department Head, will present to the staff for concurrence and approval the recommendation for appointment of the Chief Resident of the Department.

It is the duty of the Chief Resident to assist a visiting consultant. Other duties and responsibilities, rights and privileges of the Chief Resident are contained in the Residency Training program.
