Medical Center Library: Then and Now

The University of the East purchased in 1955, what was then known as Instituto de Mujeres, a five story building on a 10,000sq. Meter lot along Magsaysay Boulevard, Quezon City, which became the first home of the University of the East College of Medicine.

The Medical Library was housed on the 3rd floor of the Administrative Building. The whole library structure was conveniently divided into rectangular shaped reading room of 107sq. Meter. The reading room, with a capacity of 40 readers, was provided with large tables and chairs.

In May 1, 1965, the library was moved to its new quarters at the U.E. Research Building now known as Dr. Jose Cuyegkeng Building. It occupies the entire third floor, rectangular in shape and has an area of 10,000square feet. It was fully air-condition, adequately furnished and has a reading room with accommodations for 240 readers.

The Library used to occupy the northwest wing of the second floor which houses the Audio-Visual Library and stockroom for periodicals dated prior to 1971 and the old book collections. Which is now the Office of Research Institute for Health Sciences.

The Library maintains a carefully selected collections of books, periodicals, audio-visual materials and other printed materials in medicine, nursing, physical therapy and allied fields.

To meet the growing needs for health care researchers, On March 10, 1993, the Library subscribes to the PCHRD HERDIN ONLINE SERVICES.

On November, 1997, the Library started the Computerized Cataloging System of it book collections and indexing of periodicals.

The Library is fortunate in receiving various grants from China Medical Board of New York, Inc. formerly a subsidiary of the Rochefeller Foundation from 1960-974, various organizations, alumni, students and friends of the library.

The Library is a member of the Medical and Health Librarians Association in the Philippines (MAHLAP), Aurora Boulevard Consortium (ABC), LibraryLink and Philippine Association of Academic and Research Librarians (PAARL).

In its 50 years of existence, it has faithfully assisted the members of the UERMMMC community with their information needs.
