NATURE OF THE MBBS

  1. This MBBS program is a five-and-a-half-year program open to qualified Indian students who have completed schooling up to Grade 12 of the science stream, and must have obtained at least 50% in the All India Higher Secondary Education Examination.
  2. This MBBS program follows the Philippine school calendar, which is made up of two semesters for a total of 38 weeks per year for five and a half years.
  3. This five-and-a-half-year program is made up of two years of basic medical sciences followed by one year of pre-clinical subjects and another year of clinical work with didactic lessons. The fifth year is concerned with purely clinical rotations in the hospital, outpatient and community settings.
  4. The first year, made up of two semesters comprising 38 weeks of educational activities, is concerned with the development and mastery of the fundamental concepts of the normal adult and child in the basic medical sciences: Anatomy, Physiology and Biochemistry. It is also deals with the concepts and principles of health promotion and maintenance of health of individuals, families and communities. The students’ communication and patient relations skills are developed through the Patient-Doctor course.
  5. The second year is aimed at developing mastery of the fundamental concepts of the other basic medical sciences: Pharmacology and Therapeutics, Pathology, Microbiology and Parasitology, Medicine and Surgery. Students are introduced to the rational approach, including the evidence-based approach to diagnosis and management of disorders of the different organ systems.
  6. The third year deals with the introductory concepts and principles in the clinical disciplines such as Medicine and Neurology, Surgery, Pediatrics, Obstetrics and Gynecology, EENT and Psychiatry. Basic principles and concepts are acquired in the didactic and clinical settings, including that of research and the ethical practice of the medical profession. Alternative medical practices are also discussed as students are made aware of their uses and existence.
  7. The fourth year deals with the deeper learning and understanding of clinical concepts and the honing of clinical skills concomitant with the building of doctor-patient relationships in the clinical setting. Students learn didactics and put into practice clinical skills, research in the hospital, outpatient and community settings.
  8. The fifth year is solely devoted to ward postings, rotating in the required clinical disciplines as well as in an elective rotation and the community for a specified period.
  9. Evaluation, promotion and retention of students are based on written policies.
  10. The degree of MBBS shall be awarded to students who have satisfied all the academic requirements of the course.
