A jampacked gymnasium greeted Class 2012 as the College of Medicine welcomed its 265 freshmen students of School Year 2008-2009 to its Opening Exercises and Recognition Day last June 10, 2008. It was a well-attended activity with the Deans from all four Colleges present, along with the Director for Research Institute for Health Sciences, Dr. Fernando S. Sanchez Jr., and other important Administrative, Academic and Hospital Officials led by the President, Dr. Romeo A. Divinagracia.

The Dean of the College of Medicine, Dr. Alfaretta Luisa T. Reyes, warmly welcomed the new students and congratulated them for having hurdled successfully the strict requirements imposed by the College. The students were also challenged by the Dean to take the course seriously and to face up to the challenges of being part of the College. The Dean´s talk was followed shortly by the inspirational message from President Divinagracia, who stressed to the students the differences between a good doctor and a bad one, and encouraged everyone to deliberately choose to be the former of the two.

The activity then proceeded with the recognition and awarding of both the faculty members and students who performed well and/or had important accomplishments in the last school year. Faculty members who were currently appointed as President of a Specialty Society or Chair of Specialty Boards were recognized, as well as those who received awards and citations from different societies.
