The BioMed–APOSM 2024 delves into discoveries related to the integration of Biomedical Engineering, Prosthetics and Orthotics, Medical Devices, Rehabilitation, Technology in medical fields and life sciences.

Faculty and Alumni of UERM College of Rehabilitation Sciences took part at the 8th Asian Prosthetic & Orthotic Scientific Meeting (APOSM), a conjunction of the 7th Kuala Lumpur International Conference on Biomedical Engineering 2024 in Wyndham Grand Bangsar, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia last August 21 to 23, 2024.

The APOSM 2024 is a major international conference under the International Society for Prosthetics and Orthotics (ISPO), a multidisciplinary organization in prosthetics, orthotics, mobility and assistive devices technology to improve quality of life. The event promotes latest developments, explorations, and emerging trends, providing a platform for professionals, researchers, students, industry leaders and specialized institutions to share their knowledge, best practices, innovations and expertise.

“For the past few years, our alumni and faculty members have been actively participating in international conferences, and after the pandemic, the college has once again continued their legacy in research excellence on a global stage,” College Dean Dr. Raquel S. Cabazor said.

Three research works on advanced and innovative biomedical technologies were chosen and showcased through oral presentations in the convention. Aside from this, one of the faculty members of BS Prosthetics and Orthotics, Alyssa Joyce Gorgonio, was personally invited to be one of the chair and oral presentation moderators of the Education, Emerging and Multidisciplinary in Biomedical Engineering, Prosthetics and Orthotics session, evaluating the researchers’ presentations.

Davis James Yu, an alumnus and faculty member of BS Physical Therapy and the only licensed Physical Therapist research presenter, presented his paper under the Artificial Intelligence in Biomedical Engineering & Rehabilitation category entitled “Development Of A 3D Printed Upper Extremity Exerciser For Telerehabilitation Of Patients With Stroke” which discusses the safety, usability and effectiveness of a 3D-printed FXT stroke board exerciser that is viable for telerehabilitation use.

In a separate session, BS Prosthetics & Orthotics alumnus Juan Diego Yang introduced their research “A 3D Printed Prototype Benchtop Model of a Transtibial Residual Limb as an Alternative Prosthetic Model Used as a Learning Tool in UERMMMCI PSPO: A Pilot Study” under the Lower Limb Prosthetics & Orthotics category. Implemented during the pandemic, the paper tackles the features of an alternative transtibial model that can be used as a demo learning material in prosthetics modules to assess its usability in evaluating specific PO related skills such as bony prominence palpation, marking, and casting.

Finally, the “Filipino Rehabilitation Professionals’ Perceptions on the Potential Usage of Medical Chatbots in Lower Extremities Amputee Rehabilitation: A Descriptive Study” by BSPO faculty member and co-author André Dominic Rubiano focused on gathering the insights of the end-user’s knowledge and feedback regarding medical chatbots in assisting them about post-rehabilitation care and other specific instructions in prosthetic management.

“It is an honor to represent UERM Medical Center and join this prestigious event to showcase how we explore and advance innovative solutions for rehabilitation care that is not only responsive and impactful to the needs in Asia but around the world. We are motivated to continuously empower patients and improve their quality of life, staying true to our commitment to leadership, excellence, and compassionate service towards nation building,” Yu expressed.
