“CAReS Para sa Komunidad, CAReS Para sa Bayan”, a Medical Mission organized by the faculty of the UERM College of Allied Rehabilitation Sciences (CAReS), was successfully held at the Barangay Hall of Barangay Batis, San Juan on September 13, 2025. The event provided free and accessible healthcare services to the local community, which was made possible through the collaborative efforts of Physical Therapists, Certified Prosthetists and Orthotists, Medical Doctors, Post-Graduate Interns, the UERM Physical Therapy Alumni Association, the UERM Community Extension and Social Action Unit, Barangay Officials, and numerous volunteers who generously offered their time, skills, and compassion to serve residents in need.
The presence and support of Raquel S. Cabazor, PTRP, MD, MSPH, Dean of the UERM College of Allied Rehabilitation Sciences, Januario E. Sia-Cunco, MD, MHSE, FPSMAP, head of the UERM Community Extension and Social Action Unit, and Symon Jervis O. Chan, PTRP, president of the UERM Physical Therapy Alumni Association, further strengthened the event. Their guidance, leadership, and commitment served as an inspiration to the volunteers and participants, underscoring the spirit of collaboration and service that defined the mission.
The mission officially started at 8:00 a.m. with a short message and prayer, setting the tone for a day dedicated to service and care. Volunteers warmly welcomed and assisted the residents, and consultations were in full swing by mid-morning. The dedicated team of Physical Therapists, Certified Prosthetists and Orthotists, and Doctors attended to the patients, who carefully assessed, diagnosed, and provided advice or prescriptions based on individual needs.
Bringing Care and Empowerment to the Community
A total of 39 patients were served during the mission. Consultations were conducted for free, and those who qualified for assistive devices received the items at no cost, along with instructions and training from Licensed Physical Therapists to ensure proper and safe use.
In total, 19 assistive devices, including wheelchairs, bilateral axillary crutches, and canes, were also distributed for free. Patients requiring wheelchairs were fitted through the joint efforts of our Licensed Certified Prosthetists and Orthotists and Physical Therapists. Snacks were also distributed to patients, adding warmth and comfort to their experience and giving them the UERM brand of care and hospitality.
Beyond consultations and assistive devices, the mission also distributed free medicines, helping ease the financial burden of families who struggle to access them. Preventive care was equally emphasized through health education, counseling, and advice on maintaining wellness at home. The goal was not only to address present health conditions but also to empower individuals to take proactive steps toward healthier lifestyles.
A Testament to Unity and Service
Every individual was welcomed wholeheartedly, and the team remained grateful for the opportunity to carry out the mission. The day’s success stood as a testament to the collaborative spirit and shared dedication of all participants.
The organizers of UERM College of Allied Rehabilitation Sciences extend their heartfelt appreciation to the barangay officials for their invaluable support, the healthcare providers for their professional service, and the volunteers for their unwavering commitment and compassion. Above all, gratitude goes to the residents of Barangay Batis who placed their trust in the team.
“CAReS Para sa Komunidad, CAReS Para sa Bayan” was originally scheduled for July 26, 2025 but was postponed due to inclement weather. Persevering through the challenges of the rainy season to finally hold the mission on September 13 reflects the determination, unity, and commitment of everyone involved. Truly, by working hand in hand, we are able to bring healthcare closer to the people and continue building a stronger, healthier, and more resilient community.
