A Brief History of UERM

1956

The College of Medicine opened with its first class of 168 first year students. Dr. Juan S. Salcedo was tapped as Dean while Dr. Jose M. Cuyegkeng was Acting Dean.

In May, the UE Board of Trustees organized a non-stock, non-profit corporation. The founders were Francisco Dalupan Sr., Santiago de la Cruz, Hermenigildo Reyes, Jaime Hernandez and Jose Torres

In June, the UE College of Medicine was named “University of the East Ramon Magsaysay Memorial Medical Center” as a tribute to President Ramon Magsaysay Sr. who died in a plane crash a few months earlier.

1957

The College of Nursing was established with Purita F. Asperilla as founding Dean and offered B. S. Nursing program

The UERMMMCI Hospital was inaugurated with state of the art facilities. It had a Charity Hospital as well as a Pay Hospital for the training of students and the advancement of practice of the faculty-consultants.

1960

1961

The first medical graduates took the Physician Licensure Examination and obtained a passing rate of 89%. The first batch of thirty-one (31) nursing graduates received their B.S. Nursing degree, took the Nursing Licensure Exam and 100% passed.

The cornerstone of the University of the East Research Center for Sciences, Humanities and Culture was laid and eventually opened in 1965.

1963

1987

The establishment of the College of Physical Therapy was planned by Dr. Juan A. Alcazaren Jr., Dr. Arnel V. Malaya and Mrs. Serafina Maxino under the aegis of President Isidro Carino.

The College of Physical Therapy was opened with Dr. Juan Alcazaren as Dean. Two hundred two freshmen and fifty two second year students composed the first batch of students. The College of Nursing was granted by the Philippine Accrediting Association of Schools, Colleges and Universities (PAASCU) a Level I accreditation.

1988

1989

The College of Nursing was granted Level II accreditation.

Panfilo O. Domingo was elected Chairman of the Board of Trustees. Francisco Dalupan, Jr. became President.

1990

1992

The first batch of B. S. Physical Therapy graduates took the Board Examination. Of the 26 graduates, 25 took the examination with a passing rate of 100% and three of them garnered top places. The College of Medicine was recognized as a Center of Excellence in Research by the Philippine Council for Health Research and Development.

Dr. Romeo A. Divinagracia was appointed President and Chief Academic Officer.

1994

1995

The Board of Trustees recommended the phasing out of the Medical Center of the hospital due to labor disputes but this did not push through because of the intercession of government agencies.

Dr. Felipe B. Sese was appointed President and Chief Academic Officer.

1998

1999

The College of Nursing was granted Level III accreditation status.

The Graduate School was established with the transfer of the Master in Internal Medicine from UE Manila. A memorandum of agreement was forged with Institute of Studies on Diabetes Foundation. Dr. Romeo A. Divinagracia was reappointed President, a position he holds up to the present.

2001

2003

Dean Carmelita C. Divinagracia of the College of Nursing became concurrent Dean of the Graduate School. New programs in Masters of Science in Nursing, Public Health, and Asian Health Practice were offered. The Basic Medical Education program of the College of Medicine was granted by the Philippine Accrediting Association of Schools, Colleges and Universities (PAASCU) Level I Accreditation. It became the first and only private school that attained Level I status.

Research Development Office was expanded and renamed Research Institute for Health Sciences with Dr. Fernando S. Sanchez, Jr. as Director. The College of Medicine was accredited with Level II status.

2004

2005

The College of Physical Therapy was granted Level I PAASCU accreditation.

The UERMMMCI celebrated its 50th anniversary and renewed itself as a non-stock, non-profit corporation for another 50 years. At its 50th anniversary it had counted 9,716 graduates who have spread out to all places on the globe.

2007

2009

The UERMMMCI suffered the disaster brought about by typhoon “Ondoy” but the Center recovered from this promptly. The College of Nursing was named by CHED as Center of Excellence in Nursing Program. The B.S. Physical Therapy program was granted accreditation Level II status. The Basic Medical Education Program was granted Level III re-accredited status.

The B.S Nursing Program was granted Level III re-accredited status.

2010

2011

The Philippine School of Prosthetics and Orthotics was established at the UERMMMCI Campus with the support of Nippon Foundation and Cambodia Trust. A new program leading to B.S. in Prosthetics and Orthotics was started under the College of Physical Therapy which was renamed College of Allied Rehabilitation Sciences.

Once again the UERMMMCI suffered from flooding brought about by the monsoon rain “Habagat” but with the cooperation of all constituents, it recovered. The B.S. Physical Therapy program was granted Level III status by PAASCU.

2011

2012

The B.S. Nursing Program of the College of Nursing was one of the first in the country that was granted Level IV accreditation by PAASCU. A series of strategic planning and training courses for the management officials set plans and developed management skills.

Officials and faculty members came together in workshops to chart the roadmap to 2016. Faculty members continued to evaluate and improve their curricula in response to learners’ feedback and changing times and maintain the accreditation levels of their programs. Faculty development programs were expanded and enhanced. The College of Medicine was granted PAASCU Level IV Accreditation Status, the first private College of Medicine given this status.

2014

The UERMMMCI conferred the B.S. in Prosthetics and Orthotics degree to the first batch of eight graduates. The program leading to BS in Medical Technology was approved. First year students were accepted for SY 2014-2015.

The Colleges of Medicine and Nursing were awarded Centers of Excellence and Development respectively, by CHED.

The Health and Maintenance Organization(HMO) concierge and the Wellness Assessment Center were inaugurated as priority services in response to the increasing number of patients received by the hospital. The newly renovated Medical Center Library was launched. Recipient of the Quezon City Manuel L. Quezon Gawad Parangal Most Outstading Institution for 2016

UERM BSMT Pioneer Class 2018, 100% Passing Rate PRC Medical Technology Licensure Examination September 2018.
