Guidance and Counseling Office

Vision

The Guidance and Counseling Office is an integral part of UERMMMCI’s educational system. It provides services that promote students’ academic, career, social, and personal development. Guidance services are delivered to the students during their stay at the university. The guidance counselors work together with the faculty, parents, and the university administration to support students make informed choices.

Mission

To provide a comprehensive counseling program for all students to experience educational success by providing guidance in the areas of academic, career, and personal-social development;

To help students surmount challenges that hamper learning and advocacy for providing support through collaboration with educators, families, and communities to meet the needs of all students by providing guidance

To maximize student potential to become responsible citizens and productive members of a global workplace

Guidance Services

  • Counseling – the HEART of the Guidance Program– A helping relationship where the student is assisted into exploring his or her problems, behaviors, feelings, and cognition; is empowered to effectively handle concerns, work towards the desired change, and achieve goals. Counseling may be individual (a one-on-one helping relationship) or facilitated by a group.

  • Follow-Up– The continuous monitoring of the student’s status and progress with the case

  • Appraisal or Testing The process of fostering self-awareness through the administration and interpretation of psychological assessment tools such as aptitude and personality tests, geared toward understanding the self better as well as making informed decisions

  • Psychoeducation The process of educating students with appropriate information about relevant issues and concerns necessary in promoting psychological well-being and contributing to the students’ holistic learning experience.

  • Consultation and Referral– Counselors working with the students’ significant others — family members, teachers, friends, and even other mental health professionals to improve the students’ environment and help them cope with life’s problems. Should further assistance be necessary, students are referred to the UERM Department of Psychiatry or to Psychologists/Psychiatrists of their choice with respect to their financial capability and accessibility of services.
  • Individual Inventory– The systematic collection, evaluation, and interpretation of data to identify students’ characteristics and potential.

  • Research and Evaluation– The enhancement of the quality of guidance services being offered by making it relevant and responsive to student’s needs through the use of evidence-based information.
