Bangkok Breakthrough: Sharing a Passion for Teen Reproductive Health

The College of Nursing students presented their paper, “The Effects of Peer Education Program on the Attitude of Teenagers on Contraceptives,” at the 2025 AUA Academic Conference and Workshops held on February 25 to 26, 2025. The theme, SAFE Reproductive Health 2025, aligned perfectly with the research students’ focus and long-standing advocacy for sexual and reproductive health (SRH).

Their journey began on December 31, 2024, when the group submitted their abstract paper. In less than a month, they were accepted into the conference, allowing them to commit fully to preparing for the oral presentation.

On January 26, 2025, the Nursing student-researchers participated in workshops focused on Safe Reproductive Health, specifically addressing Violence Against Women and SRH Challenges in Asia. The event showcased insightful discussions led by various speakers and a case study discussion. Angelo Gabriel P. San Juan represented the group, providing a concise overview of their collaborative responses.

On February 23, 2025, six members of the research group—Alyya A. Alegre, Georgia Francesca R. Florendo, Ray Margarette A. Magcalas, Angelo Gabriel P. San Juan, Janine Franchesca M. Suministrado, and Maria Julianna V. Velasco—and their research adviser, Mae Christie L. Elegado, flew to Bangkok. Three additional team members—Keilah Kristabel C. Aquino, Jannelle Kye D. Coning, and Toni Anne L. Muaña—participated in the SAFE Reproductive Health Lecture Series with Dr. Moazzam Ali, a distinguished expert from the World Health Organization. The lecture series provided invaluable insights into SRH, enhancing the Nursing students’ knowledge and reinforcing their commitment to healthcare.

The conference officially commenced on February 25, 2025 with over a hundred participants across 17 countries at the King Chulalongkorn Memorial Hospital. Janine Franchesca M. Suministrado, the leader of the research group, presented the group’s research during the Public Health, Social Policies, and Cancer Research session. She shared the stage with 10 others, including postgraduates, an associate professor, a health promotion officer, and students from other schools. The session was chaired by two distinguished experts: Professor Tara Keck from University College London, United Kingdom and Dr. Cepi Teguh Pramayadi from Universitas Indonesia, Indonesia.

The conference reached its culmination when the winners of the Oral and Poster Presentation Contests were announced. The research group was proclaimed one of the Oral Presentation Contest winners, recognizing their hard work, passion, and dedication to advancing SRH education.

The UERM College of Nursing students are incredibly grateful for the opportunity to present their research on a global stage, engaging with experts, scholars, and fellow advocates in the field of SRH. Their experience in Bangkok not only validated their efforts but also fueled their determination to continue their advocacy and research in this critical area. This recognition marks a significant milestone in their ongoing mission to create positive change in SRH education and make a lasting impact on communities worldwide.
