5-Year RESEARCH AGENDA (2022-2026)

Research Agenda setting was conducted by the Research Institute by incorporating the agenda of the different Colleges. The following themes were derived:

  1. Community-based research on preventable risk factors for non-communicable diseases
  2. Clinical research on the management of non-communicable diseases in the primary care setting
  3. Complementary medicine would be self-care and the patterns of use of complementary medicine by the lay
  4. Health systems research would be the burden of disease and impact on healthcare

The 3 colleges of the Medical Center are PAASCU accredited with the highest level of accreditation among its peers. There is a need to document and tell the public why UERM colleges are the best in their respective fields. We can also cover researches on our teaching strategies, our student selection, and the impact of our education on their future career and ultimately, we are also interested in where our graduates are now in terms of their career paths and location.

Education Research

  • Evaluation of methods/strategies of teaching of different colleges
  • Evaluation of Student Selection parameters
  • Evaluation of outside rotations/internship programs
  • Predictors of completion of Medicine/P.T./Nursing/Med. Tech education
  • Impact of graduate education in actual health care settings
  • Career paths and location of graduates

We want to focus on non-communicable diseases (NCDs) because they are the top killers in the Philippines. Of the total deaths, more than half will be due to the “fatal four” NCDs, namely cardiovascular disease, cancer, diabetes, and chronic respiratory disease.

More Filipinos are exposed to NCD risk factors (tobacco and alcohol use, unhealthy diets, and physical inactivity) This makes millions of Filipinos vulnerable to developing NCDs in the future.

Community Based Research

The Research Institute is directly under the President of the Medical Center. It has an office headed by the Vice President for Research. All research activities in the Medical Center, except those of the students of the different colleges, are under the supervision of the Research Institute.

The Research Institute is linked with units with research functions through the research coordinators of the units. The coordinators are administratively under the unit heads and functionally under the Director of Research.

Clinical Research for Pediatrics

To address the unmet children's needs, we have decided to focus on just 3 areas in the meantime: vision screening, Leptospirosis, and psychiatric conditions. These are still unmet needs

Complementary and Alternative Medicine

People nowadays, tend to become more health-conscious than ever before. As a hospital, it is important to know how the use of complementary and alternative medicine affects the health-seeking behavior of our prospective patients. We can capitalize on this knowledge and might want to embark on complementary medicine (such as acupuncture) as a service for our patients.

  • Nutraceuticals/Food supplement: pattern of use/ common perceptions that lead consumers to use and impact of nutraceutical use on health service utilization and outcome
  • Filipino traditional and complementary medicine
  • Establish/develop measures on how we can evaluate the efficacy of complementary and alternative medicine

Health Systems Research

We can take a look at the type of diseases which we are being consulted for. We can also take a look if we are doing a good job in treating them by obtaining deaths, complications, and the extent of services we offer. We can also report the best practices we have in the hospital and do cost evaluations and patient satisfaction studies of the different procedures/services in the hospital. We can create disease registries.
  • Creation of disease registries
  • Report Best Practices of TB DOTS clinic of UERM
  • Burden of Disease Studies / Health Economics
  • Reviews/meta-analysis on Systemic efficacy of surgical treatments
  • Patient satisfaction with the different services of the Hospital
  • Cost-effectiveness studies on procedures/services in the hospital
  • Health information systems
  • Developing novel modalities for diagnosis and treatment
  • Observational studies on Covid
  • Researches that assess mental health status of the population and current mental health services
  • TB, dengue, and other infectious diseases
